The Standard for High Voltage: How a Small Senior Team is Rebuilding Trust in Grid Connections

Every grid connection carries risk. A programme that slips. A design that does not reflect site realities. A contractor who wins the work on price, only to recover costs through variations once the project is underway. In an industry that has grown rapidly, maintaining quality, continuity and accountability have become an increasing challenge.

HVDC was founded to offer a different approach.

As an accredited Independent Connection Provider (ICP), we deliver high voltage electrical infrastructure projects across the UK, from concept through to energisation, on systems up to 132kV. Working with renewable energy developers, industrial clients, utilities, data centres, and major power users, we provide complete solutions for battery energy storage, solar, wind, EV infrastructure, and private networks.

Our business is built around a simple principle: keep experienced people involved throughout the project. With more than 75 years of combined industry experience, our senior team leads every stage—from design and tendering to construction, commissioning, and live power—providing the continuity, accountability, and technical expertise our clients rely on.

We sat down with our directors to ask a simple question: Why does HVDC exist, and what makes it different?

What follows is their story—in their own words.

Why we started HVDC

For Michael Christie, HVDC’s Commercial Director, the motivation was simple: create a business where the people who win the work are accountable for delivering it.

“We’d promise clients a great job, but too often the delivery didn’t live up to the expectation. We knew there was a better way.”
Michael Christie
Commercial Director

After years working on complex electrical infrastructure projects, Michael recognised that continuity and accountability were often lost as projects moved from tender to delivery. The result was unnecessary delays, inconsistent communication and clients who did not receive the service they had been promised.

HVDC was founded to change that.

Rob, HVDC’s Sales Director, had seen the same challenges from a different perspective.

“Too often there are layers of management between the client and the people delivering the work. We wanted to build a business where experienced people stay involved, make the decisions and stand behind them.”
Robert Penty
Sales Director

Rather than creating another large organisation, the founders built a lean, senior-led team where experience sits at the heart of every project. From the first conversation through to commissioning and energisation, the same people remain involved—providing continuity, technical expertise, and clear accountability every step of the way.

For us, better project delivery starts with experienced people taking responsibility from beginning to end.

Who we help, and the problems we solve

Our clients may operate in different sectors, but they usually share the same priorities: certainty, communication, and programme.

Whether it is a renewable energy developer working towards energisation, a major industrial facility requiring additional capacity, or a data centre needing a new grid connection, delays can have significant commercial consequences. Every week without power can impact construction programmes, operational deadlines, and investment returns.

“Programme certainty and reliability are everything. Our clients need clear communication, proactive management and confidence that their project is progressing.”
Michael Christie
Commercial Director

That is where HVDC makes the difference.

We take ownership of the entire connection process, coordinating with DNOs, IDNOs, clients and delivery partners to keep projects moving. From regular progress updates and programme reviews to proactive stakeholder management, we ensure our clients always know where their project stands and what happens next.

As Rob explains:

“There will always be challenges on complex infrastructure projects. The difference isn’t whether issues arise, it’s how quickly you identify them, communicate them and work together to resolve them.”
Roberty Penty
Sales Director

By maintaining clear communication, taking ownership of every stage, and responding quickly when circumstances change, we remove uncertainty from the delivery process and give our clients confidence that their project will reach energisation safely, efficiently and on programme.

Why a senior team makes the difference

Many assume that bigger means better. We believe experience, accountability, and agility matter far more than headcount.

At HVDC, we have brought together the capability and technical expertise of a much larger contractor within a small, senior-led team. That means the people making decisions are the same people pricing, planning, and delivering your project.

“The strength of our business isn’t measured by the size of our team; it’s measured by the experience within it. We’ve brought together the capability of a much larger contractor in a small group of highly experienced professionals.”
Michael Christie
Commerical Director

For our clients, the benefit is simple: faster decisions, direct access to experienced professionals and no unnecessary layers of management. Questions are answered quickly, solutions are developed collaboratively, and projects keep moving.

That same experience is reflected in every proposal we produce.

Alex Dixon, who leads our tendering division, believes every recommendation should be backed by evidence, not assumption.

“Everything we deliver has a purpose and a reason. Every recommendation is backed by engineering calculations, technical evidence and trusted manufacturer data.”
Alex Dixon
Tendering Manager

From concept design through to construction, our engineering decisions are grounded in sound technical analysis and practical delivery experience. By getting the design right from the outset, we reduce risk, minimise change during construction and give our clients greater confidence in cost, programme, and delivery.

Honesty. Transparency. Trust.

At HVDC, we believe long-term relationships are built on trust, and trust starts with commercial transparency.

Our approach is simple: provide accurate pricing, explain our assumptions, and manage any changes openly and fairly. When variations arise, as they sometimes do on complex infrastructure projects, we collaborate with our clients to find the right solution, not simply the most profitable one.

“I’m happy to work on an open-book basis. If a variation arises, I’ll show you exactly how it’s costed and apply the agreed mark-up. A variation is a problem we solve together, not an opportunity to increase margins.”
Robert Penty
Commercial Director

This philosophy also shapes the way we prepare our tenders.

Rather than pricing to win and addressing challenges later, we take the time to understand the project, identify risks, and develop realistic, deliverable solutions. That approach may not always produce the lowest headline figure, but it gives our clients greater certainty over cost, programme, and delivery.

As Michael explains:

“A lowest initial price doesn’t always transpire to the lowest project cost. An accurate, well-considered proposal gives clients a far clearer picture of what the project will actually require.”
Michael Christie
Commerical Director

We’ve seen projects where early assumptions led to significant additional costs once construction began. By investing the time upfront to understand the engineering challenges, we help our clients avoid unnecessary surprises later.

Ultimately, our commitment is straightforward: to do what we say we will do, price projects honestly, and deliver exactly what we have promised.

Fast delivery. No compromise.

Our clients value speed because every day saved on programme can make a significant difference to project costs and commercial outcomes.

At HVDC, we believe projects can move quickly without compromising the standards that matter most.

“There’s no compromise.”
Robert Penty
Sales Director

For Rob, that’s more than a philosophy. As HVDC’s NERS Assessing Officer and Health & Safety Lead, he ensures quality, compliance and safety are embedded in every stage of delivery, not treated as an afterthought.

Michael is equally clear about where the line is drawn.

“There are some things you simply don’t compromise on. Design quality and health & safety are fundamental to protecting people, infrastructure and the long-term success of every project.”
Michael Christie
Commercial Director

Instead of taking shortcuts, we find efficiencies through better planning and smarter delivery. Early procurement of long-lead items, concurrent workstreams, proactive stakeholder coordination and flexible working all help us accelerate programmes while maintaining the highest standards of engineering, quality, and safety.

Fast where it adds value. Uncompromising where it matters most.

Proof in practice

Our approach is defined by the projects we deliver.

One recent example is a 50MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Scotland, where HVDC delivered the complete 33kV Balance of Plant (BOP) electrical package for a leading renewable energy developer. Completed in April 2026, the project was valued at approximately £1.2 million and delivered to demanding programme milestones.

Our scope covered every stage of the electrical infrastructure, from detailed design through to live power. This included kilometres of HV, LV and DC cabling, jointing and terminations, the 33kV DNO connection, protection and SCADA integration, testing, commissioning, and final energisation, all delivered in accordance with NERS accreditation requirements and G81 standards.

The project demonstrates exactly how HVDC works: one experienced team taking responsibility from concept through to energisation, delivering safely, efficiently and with complete accountability.

It is the kind of project we were built to deliver, and the way we believe every grid connection should be delivered.

Setting the standard

It’s not about becoming the biggest. It’s about becoming the contractor clients trust to deliver the right outcome, every time.

“We’re proactive, not reactive. We don’t see our clients as opportunities, we see them as long-term partners. Our job is to add value, build trust and deliver projects the right way.”
Robert Penty
Sales Director

Everything we do is built around that philosophy: experienced people taking responsibility, engineering decisions backed by evidence, transparent commercial practices, and an uncompromising commitment to quality, safety, and delivery.

Our ambition is simple.

“We want to set the standard for high voltage infrastructure. We want our work to become the benchmark clients measure others against.”
Robert Penty
Sales Director

As HVDC continues to grow, that ambition will not change. We will remain a senior-led business, committed to delivering every project with the same accountability, technical expertise, and customer focus that the company was founded on.
